The Air Force says the first of its Boeing [BA]-built Wideband Global Satellite Communications (WGS) spacecraft was successfully launched into orbit recently, beginning the process of placing a modern constellation in space by early next decade to replace the service's aging on-orbit communications infrastructure. Following a series of orbital maneuvers and on-orbit testing, the satellite is expected to begin service in early 2008, Boeing said yesterday.
