Navy To Extend Life Of 12 Destroyers And Three Cruisers

The Navy plans to extend the operations of 12 Flight 1 Arleigh Burke-class (DDG-51) destroyers and three Ticonderoga-class cruisers past their planned service lives to boost fleet numbers, the service said recently.  The Navy first announced the destroyer extensions on Oct. 31 and then added the cruisers on Nov. 4. The service said the destroyer extensions were decided on a hull-by-hull basis of ship material condition, combat capability, technical feasibility and lifecycle maintenance requirements that will allow the selected ships…
